A close loss the semifinals ended the Golden West College men’s volleyball team’s hopes for a state championship. The Rustlers fell to Long Beach City College 3-2 on April 28 at Pierce College to finish their season at 18-5 overall.
The Vikings (20-2) were the favorite but GWC gave the Vikings a tough contest. LBCC won the first game 25-23, but the green-and-gold won 25-23 in the next one. The Rustlers pulled ahead 2-1 with another 25-23 win, and then LBCC tied it with a 26-24 victory.
It all came down to the fifth game, and the Vikes pulled out a 15-12 victory.
Chase Palumbo led the Rustlers with 23 kills, followed by Andrew Tenbrink (17) and Vincent Pizzuti (12). Palumbo also had 15 digs while Daniel Vasquez added 13.
To make it to the semifinals, the Rustlers had to defeat a tough El Camino College team 3-2.
Although they didn’t win the state title, the Rustlers took second place in the tough Pacific Coast Athletic Conference.
