The red-hot Golden West College baseball team cooled off a little last Saturday, but has a chance to really turn up the heat in the Orange Empire Conference race when it faces Saddleback College in three games this week.
GWC won five straight games before falling 7-6 to Santa Ana College in extra innings, which put the Rustlers at 9-6 in OEC play (20-10 overall). That’s a third-place tie with Cypress, and four games behind Saddleback (13-2, 25-5).
The Rustlers can move up with a strong performance in the three-game series with the Gauchos. The series started Tuesday (results too late for our print deadline) at Saddleback in Mission Viejo, then resumes Thursday at GWC before finishing on Saturday back at Saddleback.
Following that series, green-and-gold will concludes conference play with a three-game set against Cypress April 26-29. Post-season stars May 4.
In the run-up to the Saddleback series, GWC started its five-game streak with a sweep of Riverside City College, winning 3-1, 5-1 and 5-0. Next the Rustlers took two from Santa Ana, prevailing 4-3 and 6-1 before the loss.
So far this season, GWC stars at bat include Dillon Persinger, who is batting .495 with six home runs and 34 RBIs and Cody Marshall (.351, 23 RBIs). As a team, GWC is hitting .328.
On the mound, Tyler Tungate has been the standout, posting a 6-1 record and a 3.00 ERA. Brett Mays is 5-0 and 3.04 and Cody Marshall 4-3 and 5.19. The team earned run average is 3.94.
