The Golden West College women’s volleyball team went 1-1 last week during their two game home stand against Santa Ana College and local rivals Orange Coast College.

The Rustlers opened up with a great performance against SAC, winning in three straight games 25-16, 25-13, and 27-25. Two days later the pirates of OCC rolled onto campus and defeated the Rustlers with a three game sweep of their own by scores of 25-16, 25-15, and 25-19.

The Pirates showed how tough they were all match with their impressive play, and their record shows. After Friday’s match OCC now boasts an impressive record of 14-1 in overall play, with their only loss coming from Golden West on Oct. 7.

The Rustler women’s volleyball team still holds a winning record, but they’re play hasn’t been consistent as of late.

Last Wednesday the women played great against a resilient SAC team. SAC managed to keep the last set close by fending off lightning quick spikes with excellent digs of their own.

Maritza Montes and Allie Board played terrific last Wednesday with Montes leading the surge with 16 kills. Board finished the night with a balanced attack and stellar defensive play by putting on a 11-kill, 12-dig performance.

The women’s worst enemy was themselves that night as coach Lawler told the team “don’t out-do yourselves, just play,” during a deficit in the third match with SAC. During that close third set the Rustlers found themselves in a 24-25 hole.

Coach Lawler then called for a much-needed timeout that resulted in three straight points for a 27-25 comeback to finish off the match.

Golden West is going to need some strong play heading into the last matches before the Southern California Regionals.

The women have two more games left here at home, with a rematch against Fullerton College Friday Nov. 6, and Irvine Valley College on Nov. 18.
