The Rustler men’s soccer team earned another victory at home against Santiago Canyon Oct 27.

GWC scored midway through the first half off a free kick placed beautifully in the upper corner of the net by Jordan Long.

GWC nearly doubled the lead when Juan Carlos Rodriguez cracked a shot off the crossbar.

The score remained 1-0 at halftime, yet GWC held momentum throughout the game. In the second half Pedro Mendoza assisted Jose de La Cruz and later Jose returned the favor assisting Pedro for a 3-0 lead. Santiago scored on a penalty kick to end the scoring with GWC winning 3-1.

GWC and Cypress are neck and neck in the race for the Orange Empire Conference title. The two teams battled for 65 minutes to a scoreless tie on Oct 30.

Jose de la Cruz finally broke the deadlock with a crack of a volley that

found the corner of the net to make it 1-0. GWC scored 10 minutes later when De la Cruz found Justin Thompson on a break and JT converted the shot to seal the match at 2-0. The Rustlers are 9-6-1.

The Rustlers hosted Orange Coast College on Tuesday (results too late for our deadline), then will visit Irvine Valley on Friday. On Tuesday the green-and-gold will be home again against Riverside City College and again on Nov. 13 against Santa Ana to conclude the OEC season.
