When a student pays for class, they are paying for a chance to learn, to gain knowledge, and a chance to get a good grade for that class. At $78+ for a three unit course, they ought to make their college classes a priority.
If a full-time student is paying about $400 for classes, they should understand that they are making a decision to learn and that it’s their decision to take the class seriously; otherwise, a bad or failing grade may end up on their permanent transcript.
Sure, courses can be retaken, but it’s their money and their chance to learn that flies out the window.
Not to mention for every student retaking the class there is one less space available for students who need the class.
When someone misses a class, they miss out on learning and growing. It sounds like grade school, right? But that is the truth.
Think about it.
If you don’t show up and don’t engage yourself in the class, and somehow pass, what did you learn?
Understandably, there are students who are struggling to juggle school, work, and family and simply can’t attend class or even finish the course. Those students have my respect because they are trying to better their education while taking care of their family and supporting them.
It’s the students that come to class just to play on their cellphones and distract other students that don’t have any of my respect. Come to class to learn, if that isn’t the motive, then why attend?
There are students who just like to party and don’t show enough responsibility to even do the homework assignments nor even attempt to study the material and it seems to me that college is being wasted on them.
Not knowing what one wants to do with their life as far as a career or education goes is normal. Take classes and take electives, until the revelation of what and who you want to be hits.
But there are also students whose parents force them go to school, perhaps even paying for their tuition.
Let them give up their spot in that overcrowded psychology class that already has 10 other students petitioning for it.
Otherwise, what is the point if they aren’t going to put in effort? If you miss the refund date, that $400 is not coming back.
Students need to take serious consideration for the classes they are taking and learn to prioritize their lives. If they don’t what’s the point of pursuing a high education.
