Don’t let your bad days get you down

By Nick Roettiger

There are days that I wake up so stressed out, it’s unbelievable. Between working full time, attending school full time, and worrying about a daughter I hardly ever get to see, some days it just feels like I’m standing on the brink of my own destruction.

Some days are fine, and I wake up knowing that I can conquer any problem that comes my way without any trouble at all. Other mornings I wake up angry, and approach the world as if I’m assertive enough, every obstacle I run into will explode under my fist.

Still far too often, I wake up depressed and feeling emotionally drained, not wanting to confront anything at all, and it’s days like that, that are the very worst.

I think sometimes just being a part of the culture we live in is enough to make anyone go crazy every now and then. As Americans, we have this constant pressure to become bigger, better and more powerful than everyone else. Whether we like to admit it or not, most of us cater to this philosophy.

The fact is, most of us get so caught up in the rat race of trying to be successful that at even the earliest sign of trouble, we begin to panic and feel as though the world is going to crumble from beneath our feet. It’s living in this way that is going to be the death of all of us worry-warts.

So, before you give yourself a stroke worrying about problems that ultimately don’t matter, let me ask you a question.
What’s the worst that could happen?

Asking yourself this question every now and then is important, because no matter how far down you follow the chain of consequences, the root answer is always “nothing”. No matter how horrible things may seem, or may have the potential to become, the truth is, it still isn’t all that bad.

You’ll still wake up tomorrow, and really, that’s all you need- another day to make the very best of. So unless you wake up one morning, and there are literally fireballs raining from the sky, I promise you, everything is going to be just fine.
As for now, just take a deep breath. Don’t waste time waiting around for horrible news – it’s not coming.

Life is good, and even the most horrible days will come to an end eventually, so don’t stress over the consequences of tomorrow. Today is yours, my friend. It’s yours to do with what you wish.

Enjoy it.
